A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAMA) suggests that adopting heart-healthy behaviors can reverse the aging process in cells and lower the risk of developing heart disease. Researchers found that increasing one’s Life’s Essential 8 score, a guideline that assesses cardiovascular health based on various factors, can have significant benefits.

The study, which involved 5,682 adults with a mean age of 56, looked at the relationship between lifestyle factors, genetic predisposition, and biological aging. By following the Life’s Essential 8 guidelines, participants were able to improve their cardiovascular health and slow down the aging process at a cellular level.

Dr. Yu-Ming Ni, a cardiologist and lipidologist, emphasized the importance of taking care of one’s cardiovascular health, especially for individuals with a family history of heart disease. The study showed that even those with a higher genetic risk can greatly benefit from following heart-healthy behaviors.

DNA methylation, a process that regulates gene expression and is linked to biological aging, was used to estimate participants’ biological age. The researchers found that each 13-point increase in the Life’s Essential 8 score was associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of new-onset cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in death from any cause.

Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, an interventional cardiologist, highlighted the significance of lifestyle factors in influencing genetic changes and overall cardiovascular health. The study’s findings provide valuable insights into the importance of maintaining good cardiovascular health through lifestyle modifications.

While the study had some limitations, such as a predominantly white European participant group, experts agree that making lifestyle changes is crucial in preventing and managing cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, and sleep, play a key role in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Early treatment for cardiovascular disease is essential in preventing its progression to more severe stages. Jiantao Ma, PhD, a senior study author, emphasized the importance of heart-healthy behaviors in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
