The Impact of Extreme Temperatures on Preterm Births, Respiratory Diseases, and Mortality in Children

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Climate change poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of children worldwide, with immediate and long-lasting consequences. As temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, children are increasingly vulnerable to a range of health risks, from respiratory diseases to mental health challenges. Understanding and addressing these risks is crucial to safeguarding the health of future generations.

One of the most pressing concerns is the impact of climate change on respiratory diseases in children. Poor air quality due to increased pollution and wildfires can exacerbate conditions like asthma and bronchitis, posing a serious risk to children’s health. Additionally, climate change contributes to a higher incidence of preterm births, with pregnant women being particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures, leading to potential health complications for both newborns and mothers.

Dr. Kanchankumar Ramrao Bhagyawant, a consultant paediatrician and neonatologist at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, emphasizes the threat of heat-related illnesses to children, especially as temperatures continue to rise. Children are more sensitive to heat than adults, and prolonged exposure can result in heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening if not promptly treated.

In addition to direct health impacts, climate change also influences the spread of vector-borne diseases, increasing the risk of infections like malaria and dengue fever in children. Furthermore, extreme weather events and displacement can have profound effects on children’s mental health, leading to anxiety and trauma.

Addressing the health impacts of climate change on children requires a comprehensive approach, including public health interventions, environmental policies, and community-based initiatives. By prioritizing the health of children, we can build a more resilient and sustainable world for future generations.
