The impact of lifestyle choices on the aging and deterioration of our bodies | Pune News

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has launched the ‘Longevity India Initiative’ under the leadership of Prof Deepak Saini. This groundbreaking clinical study aims to understand the aging process in the Indian population and find ways to promote healthy aging.

Dr. Saini compares the human body to a vehicle, emphasizing that certain lifestyle choices can impact how our bodies age and deteriorate over time. The study will focus on assessing immunity, biological and functional changes, and identifying organ-specific aging signatures unique to Indians.

The first phase of the study will involve collecting biological material from 2,000 healthy individuals aged 19-100+. Participants will also complete detailed questionnaires about their lifestyle and medical history. The data sampling process is expected to take at least two years, with collaborations with Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) and M S Ramaiah Medical College.

Individuals with chronic disorders or recent infections will not be included in the study. The research aims to pinpoint biological markers of healthy aging and predict the weakest organ in the body. The ultimate goal is to extend healthy life expectancy and prevent age-related diseases through scientific interventions.

The initiative has received initial funding from Prashanth Prakash, a founding partner at Accel India. Researchers from various IISc departments, clinicians, industry experts, philanthropists, and civil society will collaborate on this ambitious project. The ‘Longevity India Initiative’ is a significant step towards understanding aging through the lens of science and technology, with the potential to revolutionize how we approach aging in the Indian population.
