The Potential Impact of Poor Weather and ‘March Madness’ Upsets on Q1 Sports Betting Revenue

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Gaming and sports betting companies like DraftKings, MGM Resorts International, and Penn Entertainment are gearing up to report their first-quarter earnings in the coming weeks. Investors are eagerly awaiting these reports to get a better understanding of how factors like “March Madness” sports betting and inclement weather earlier this year have impacted their financial performance.

The NCAA Division I men’s college basketball tournament, which concluded with Connecticut winning its second consecutive championship, is a significant event for sports betting each year. The American Gaming Association estimated that American adults legally bet $2.72 billion on the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments this year, making up 2.2% of the total amount wagered across the industry in 2023.

The women’s tournament, which saw South Carolina emerge as the undefeated champions, also drew record viewership. The championship game between South Carolina and Iowa set a new record for the largest audience for any college basketball game, surpassing both men’s and women’s games on ESPN platforms.

Bank of America analysts have highlighted that upsets in the early rounds of “March Madness” could impact the earnings of companies like DraftKings, while March results will be crucial for Penn’s ESPN Bet, which only launched last November. Additionally, severe weather conditions at the start of the year may have affected the earnings of companies like Penn and MGM, which operate physical casinos.

Overall, the upcoming earnings reports from these gaming companies will provide valuable insights into the financial implications of recent events on their business operations. Other companies like Red Rock Resorts, Boyd Gaming Corporation, and Caesars Entertainment are also set to report their earnings later this month or in early May. Investors will be closely monitoring these developments to make informed decisions about their investments in the gaming and sports betting sector.
