The primary obstacle in our community is accessing mental health services.

Accessing mental health services is the biggest barrier in our community, according to Bonnie Lane, principal consultant with Family Support Services in Northbrook. As Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in May, it is crucial to understand the significance of good mental health practices and to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illnesses.

Lane emphasizes that access to care is the most critical component in any treatment plan. Families with a loved one struggling with severe mental illness or substance use disorder often find it overwhelming to navigate the complex system of mental health services. The services are available, but they can be challenging to find and access, with long wait times for therapists and psychiatrists.

In response to the growing need for mental health services, Illinois is taking steps to increase the number of licensed clinicians. The state is pioneering a new approach to licensure for individuals who have not passed the licensed clinical social worker exam, allowing them to gain experience through an apprenticeship program.

Furthermore, the Living Room Program in Illinois provides drop-in services for individuals experiencing increased symptoms of mental illness or isolation. However, there is a shortage of staff, including certified recovery support specialists, who play a crucial role in providing peer support to those in need.

Improving insurance coverage for mental health and substance addiction care is also a pressing issue. With long wait times and limited acceptance of Medicaid and Medicare, many individuals struggle to access the care they need.

Overall, the barriers to accessing mental health services not only impact individuals and families but also have broader societal implications. By advocating for better access to care and support services, we can work towards a healthier and more inclusive community.
