The Real Life Story of a ‘Dogecoin’ Dog

From Rescue Pup To Global Icon: The Story Of Real Life ‘Dogecoin’ Dog

In Sakura, Japan, a fluffy shiba inu named Kabosu has become a global icon, known as the face of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency worth $23 billion. But to her owner, Atsuko Sato, Kabosu is just a beloved former rescue puppy who accompanies her to work at a kindergarten every day.

The journey to fame began in 2010 when Sato posted a picture of Kabosu on her blog, which later became the famous “Doge” meme. The meme grew in popularity, turning Kabosu into an internet sensation.

Despite her online fame, Kabosu spends most days resting at the kindergarten or at home, surrounded by fan-made Doge tributes. In 2022, she fell ill with leukaemia and liver disease, but with the support of fans worldwide, she managed to pull through.

In November last year, a statue of Kabosu and her sofa was unveiled in a park in Sakura, funded by Own The Doge, a crypto organization dedicated to the meme. Sato and Own The Doge have also donated large sums to international charities, including over $1 million to Save the Children.

Dogecoin, initially started as a joke by two software engineers, has now become the world’s eighth most valuable cryptocurrency. Backed by celebrities like Elon Musk, Snoop Dogg, and Mark Cuban, Dogecoin has inspired a wave of other “memecoins” based on animals and public figures.

As Kabosu approaches her estimated age of 18, her legacy as the face of Dogecoin and the symbol of internet wholesomeness will continue to live on. The story of Kabosu is a reminder of the power of memes and the importance of not taking oneself too seriously in the digital age.
