The Reasons Behind Mole Hair Growth: Answers and Tips

According to board-certified dermatologist Paul Curtiss, MD, FAAD, moles are simply a collection of cells on the skin known as melanocytes. These dark spots can appear anywhere on the body and are usually harmless. However, the presence of hair on a mole can raise questions about its significance.

Dr. Curtiss explains that moles can either be hairless or hairy, depending on their location on the body. If a mole is situated on top of a hair follicle, hairs may grow out of it faster, similar to hair growing out of a pimple. While a hairy mole may seem concerning, it does not automatically indicate cancer.

It is essential to differentiate between normal moles and potentially cancerous ones. Normal moles are typically even in color, round or oval-shaped, and less than six millimeters in diameter. On the other hand, signs of melanoma within a mole may include an irregular shape, changes in color, darkening, or a change in size.

If you notice any changes in your moles or have concerns about new growths, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. While most moles are harmless, it is crucial to monitor them for any unusual developments. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your skin’s health.
