On June 2nd, nearly 100 million Mexicans will have the opportunity to cast their votes in what is shaping up to be Mexico’s largest election ever. The frontrunner for the presidency is Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling Morena party, who currently holds a significant lead of 25 points in the opinion polls.
However, the presidency is just one of over 20,000 positions up for grabs in this election. Mexicans will also be electing representatives to all 628 seats in Congress, nine governors, more than 1,000 local legislators, and around 18,000 municipal roles. The outcome of these elections will not only determine the political landscape for the next president but also have the potential to redefine the future of Mexico’s traditional opposition parties.
The election presents voters with a choice between three main groupings: Morena, the Strength and Heart coalition, and Citizens’ Movement. Morena’s coalition, which includes the Labour Party and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico, is unlikely to secure a congressional supermajority needed to alter the constitution.
With seven of Mexico’s 32 states holding significant voting power, the outcome of the election could hinge on strategic voting patterns in key regions. While Morena controls rural and less affluent areas, wealthier and more educated populations may opt for opposition parties in local elections.
