India’s Election Tourism Industry Booms as Foreign Tourists Flock to Witness Democratic Process

With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, India’s election tourism industry is experiencing a surge in interest from foreign tourists eager to witness the country’s democratic process in action. Already, over 7,000 tourists from Western countries like the US, France, Germany, and Austria have arrived to experience how 1.4 billion people cast their votes.

According to Manish Sharma, founder of Election Tourism India and chairman of Gujarat Tourism Corporation Society, Indian elections are like festive colorful events that attract tourists looking to immerse themselves in the democratic process. States like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka have been highlighted as tourism-friendly destinations where visitors can easily experience the electoral process.

Tour packages offered by private players include local sightseeing, attending political rallies, interacting with local leaders, and even dining with them. Prices range from Rs 33,000 to Rs 45,000 per person for three nights and four days packages. Guides provided to each group are trained in Indian politics and heritage sites, ensuring a comprehensive experience for tourists.

Abbas Moiz, national general secretary of The Travel Agents’ Federation of India, noted that the interest among foreign tourists in Indian elections has been steadily increasing. With the potential for significant contributions to GDP growth, Sharma believes that with proper marketing, India could attract 5-7 lakh tourists for elections alone.

As the world’s largest democracy gears up for the upcoming elections, the influx of foreign tourists highlights the unique appeal of India’s vibrant electoral process as a major draw for international visitors.
