The United Nations General Assembly Proclaims May 25 as World Football Day

The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared May 25 as World Football Day, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament. This historic event took place during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, where teams from all regions came together to compete.

The resolution was introduced by Libya’s permanent representative to the UN, Taher M. El-Sonni, and was overwhelmingly adopted by more than 160 countries. El-Sonni emphasized the global significance of football, stating that it is more than just a game, but a universal language that transcends borders and brings people together.

Dennis Francis, the president of the General Assembly, praised the adoption of the resolution, highlighting the values of camaraderie, teamwork, fair play, and tolerance that football promotes. He emphasized that sports like football play a crucial role in building peace and solidarity worldwide.
