Renowned playwright and author David Mamet has sparked controversy with his recent comments against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Hollywood. At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Mamet boldly stated, “DEI is garbage. It’s fascist totalitarianism.”

Mamet specifically criticized the inclusion rules set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for films to be considered in the Oscar Best Picture category. He expressed frustration at the requirement for a certain percentage of diversity in order to qualify for the prestigious award, calling it intrusive and unnecessary.

In addition to his views on DEI, Mamet also addressed the issue of nepotism in Hollywood. Contrary to the belief that his children have benefitted from his success in the industry, Mamet claimed that they earned their positions on merit. His daughter, Zosia Mamet, known for her roles in “Girls” and “Madame Web,” was cited as an example of someone who earned her place in the industry through hard work.

Mamet’s latest book, titled “Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood,” delves into his experiences in the entertainment industry and offers a critical perspective on the changes brought about by digital media and the rise of the “woke brigade.”

The playwright’s controversial remarks have ignited a debate within the industry, with some supporting his views on meritocracy while others criticize his stance on diversity and inclusion.
