Thousands forced to evacuate as wildfire rages in British Columbia, Canada | Global News

Canadian authorities are urgently calling for the remaining residents of Fort Nelson, British Columbia, to evacuate immediately as a fast-growing wildfire continues to threaten the town. Despite improving weather conditions, the blaze, which started on Friday, has almost doubled in size, now covering about 17 square kilometers (4,200 acres) and burning just a few kilometers west of the city limits.

Fort Nelson, located in the far northeastern corner of British Columbia, is home to approximately 3,000 residents. In 2023, Canada experienced a record number of wildfires, causing widespread evacuations and choking smoke that even reached parts of the US.

Authorities in Alberta have also issued alerts about wildfires in the region, including one near the oil sands city of Fort McMurray. While no evacuation order has been given for Fort McMurray, concerns about visibility on highways have been raised.

Meteorologists are not expecting rain in the near future, advising residents to stay indoors to avoid the hazardous air quality caused by the wildfires. Online footage shared by locals shows thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky, with some areas covered in haze.

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and Fort Nelson First Nation have issued a joint statement warning those who choose to stay behind that emergency services and essential amenities are not available. Mayor Rob Fraser confirmed that most residents have been evacuated, with police going door to door to ensure everyone’s safety. Fort Nelson General Hospital has also been safely evacuated and closed until further notice.

The situation remains critical as authorities work to protect the residents and properties in the path of the wildfires.
