In a season filled with unexpected twists and turns, the Essexville Garber girls soccer team clinched their fifth consecutive Tri-Valley Conference Red championship in the most unconventional way possible. The title-clinching game against Freeland ended in a 2-2 tie, halted by lightning and thunder with just 3:30 left in regulation.
Despite not being able to celebrate on the field as they had imagined, the Dukes embraced the unique circumstances and accepted their hard-earned victory in the locker room. Coach Brent Betzold expressed his pride in his team, stating, “You always imagine celebrating out on the field and taking pictures in front of the goal – we did it all in a locker room. But that’s OK. We’ll take the conference championship.”
The TVC Red title race was a wild ride, with Garber, Frankenmuth, and Freeland battling it out in a series of closely contested matches. Garber’s 3-1 win over Frankenmuth proved to be the decisive factor as they finished the league season with a half-game edge over Freeland.
Despite facing deficits during the game, Garber managed to rally and secure the tie that sealed their championship win. The game was paused multiple times due to the stormy weather, but eventually, the Dukes were declared conference champs to the delight of the team and their supporters.
In a season marked by uncertainty and challenges, Garber’s victory serves as a testament to their resilience and determination. As they celebrate their hard-fought title, the Dukes look ahead to future successes with confidence and pride.
