In a thrilling boys tennis match on Thursday, the New Ulm Eagles faced off against the Hutchinson Tigers in a nonconference showdown. The Eagles started strong with three consecutive wins, but ultimately fell short as the Tigers rallied back with four straight victories to secure a 4-3 win.

Ian Schotzko at No. 4 singles set the tone for the Eagles with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win, followed by Gideon Heins at No. 3 singles who added another point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Maverick Johnson, playing at No. 1 singles, showcased his skills by defeating his opponent 6-1, 7-5 to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Despite Johnson’s impressive performance, the Tigers clawed their way back into the match. They secured wins in all three doubles matches, with Jack Hartman and Will Byron winning at No. 1 doubles, David Jenum and Eric Oberg at No. 2 doubles, and Quinton MacMullen and Gavin Guler at No. 3 doubles.

In a hard-fought battle, Eagles’ No. 2 singles player Charlie Weidman fought back after losing the first set to force a deciding third set, but ultimately fell short as the Tigers sealed the victory.

Despite the loss, the Eagles have shown resilience and improvement throughout the season, now holding a 6-3 record. Johnson praised the team’s competitive spirit and camaraderie, highlighting the tough competition they face in practices.

The Eagles will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Blue Earth Area at United South Central High School.
