TikTok removes feature from Lite app in EU due to worries about addiction

TikTok, the popular social media platform, has suspended a gamification feature in the European Union following concerns raised by the bloc regarding its potential impact on mental health. The feature, known as the “task and reward” mechanism on the TikTok Lite app, allows users to earn points for activities like watching and liking videos.

The European Union recently opened an investigation into this feature, citing worries about its addictive design and the potential risks it poses to young people. Under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), TikTok is obligated to address systemic risks, including those related to child safety and mental health. However, the company failed to provide a risk assessment report when requested by EU enforcers.

In response to the EU’s concerns and the threat of penalties under the DSA, TikTok announced a voluntary suspension of the rewards feature in the region. This move came just two days after the EU signaled its intention to use interim measures to potentially shut down the app while conducting an investigation.

The EU’s internal-market-commissioner, Thierry Breton, emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential harm on social media platforms. He praised TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program but noted that the cases against TikTok regarding the addictiveness of the platform are ongoing.

This development highlights the EU’s commitment to enforcing online governance rules and ensuring the safety of its online space. TikTok Lite, the alternative app for users with older phones or limited network access, remains under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigations into TikTok’s compliance with the DSA.
