TikTok’s Reaction to President Biden Signing U.S. TikTok Ban Bill

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Biden signed a national security bill into law on Wednesday that could force TikTok to be sold by its owner ByteDance or face a possible ban in the United States. In response, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew posted a video on the platform reassuring users that the app is not going anywhere.

Chew declared, “rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere,” and emphasized that the legislation signed by Biden gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok, with a possible three-month extension if a sale is in progress. The bill also prevents ByteDance from controlling TikTok’s algorithm, which has been a key factor in the app’s popularity.

Chew highlighted the importance of freedom of speech and expressed disappointment in the new law, but remained optimistic. He encouraged TikTok users to share their stories about how the app has impacted their lives to showcase the platform’s value.

With the legislation now in effect, TikTok is expected to challenge it in court. If ByteDance fails to find a buyer by January 24, 2025, the app could be banned in the U.S. However, Chew expressed confidence in the company’s legal position and vowed to continue fighting for users’ rights.

As the battle over TikTok’s future unfolds, users are urged to share their support for the platform and its role in providing a platform for free expression. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
