As the new year kicks off, many of us are filled with enthusiasm and determination to achieve our health and fitness goals for 2024. However, a grim reality looms over us as ‘Quitter’s Day’ arrives, marking the day when people are most likely to abandon their New Year’s resolutions.

Research has shown that the second Friday in January, which falls on January 12 this year, is the tipping point for many individuals who set resolutions at the beginning of the year. According to a study by SunLife, over a quarter of Brits have already given up on their resolutions before the weekend even begins.

Despite the best intentions, only 15% of people manage to stick with their resolutions throughout the year, with the majority giving up by the end of February. The top three resolutions for Brits this year include exercising more, reducing stress, and having a healthier diet.

Chantal Gautier, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Westminster, explains that people often struggle to maintain their resolutions because they put too much pressure on themselves and expect instant results. She advises breaking down larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks and celebrating small victories along the way.

To help individuals stay on track with their fitness resolutions, exercise expert Gavin Cowper recommends finding a workout buddy, joining a club, setting achievable goals, becoming a morning person, building exercise habits into daily life, adopting the SMART method, tracking progress, and taking the pressure off by choosing activities that are enjoyable.

As ‘Quitter’s Day’ approaches, it’s important to remember that setbacks are normal and progress takes time. By following these tips and strategies, individuals can increase their chances of sticking to their fitness goals and achieving long-term success.
