Top 25 US beaches uncovered — 2 unexpected NYC locations included

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The recent release of Travel & Leisure’s list of the “25 Best Beaches in the USA” has caused quite a stir, with two unexpected New York City spots making the cut. While the coastal beauty of Long Island is often touted as one of the nation’s finest beach destinations, it was notably absent from the prestigious list.

Brooklyn’s iconic Coney Island and Queens’ Rockaway Beach were both recognized for their unique charm and entertainment offerings, earning them a spot alongside renowned beaches like Poipu Beach in Hawaii and Santa Monica Beach in California.

Described as a “seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun,” Coney Island boasts a range of attractions, including amusement parks, games, and the famous Cyclone roller coaster. Additionally, the proximity of the New York Aquarium adds to the beach’s appeal, providing visitors with a diverse array of activities to enjoy.

Rockaway Beach, a favorite of the legendary band The Ramones, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with the renovation of its historic Jacob Riis bathhouse and the emergence of trendy shops, food trucks, and bars along its shores. The opening of the upscale Rockaway Hotel and pool further elevated the beach’s status as a must-visit destination.

Despite the accolades received by Coney Island and Rockaway Beach, some may question the absence of Long Island’s Coopers Beach in Southampton, which has consistently ranked among the top beaches in the country. Similarly, the beloved Fire Island National Seashore, known for its picturesque trails and iconic lighthouse, was also overlooked in the list.

On the East Coast, other notable beach destinations that made the cut include Ocean Beach Park in Connecticut, Watch Hill in Rhode Island (home to Taylor Swift’s oceanfront mansion), and Good Harbor Beach in Massachusetts. In New Jersey, Asbury Park, a rock music hub with a vibrant beach scene, and Ocean City, Maryland, were also recognized for their unique offerings.

While the inclusion of Coney Island and Rockaway Beach may have raised eyebrows among beach enthusiasts, the diverse selection of beaches on Travel & Leisure’s list serves as a reminder of the rich coastal landscape that the United States has to offer. Whether you prefer the bustling boardwalks of New York City or the serene shores of New England, there is no shortage of stunning beach destinations to explore and enjoy.
