Top 8 Contenders: A Guide to Voting in the Deseret News Poll

Reading Time: < 1 minute

“American Idol” is heating up as the competition narrows down to its top eight singers. On Sunday night, the show will reveal who makes the cut, with two contestants being eliminated based on viewer votes during the live episode.

Country music star Shania Twain will mentor the top 10 contestants as they perform songs from their birth years. The episode will also feature performances from past winners Scotty McCreery and Just Sam. Just Sam made history last year as the first winner to be crowned remotely due to the pandemic.

The top 10 singers include McKenna Faith Breinholt, Jack Blocker, Mia Matthews, Sam “Kayko” Kelly-Cohen, Will Moseley, Abi Carter, Kaibrienne Richins, Emmy Russell, Julia Gagnon, and Triston Harper. Two of them will be sent home during Sunday’s episode.

Viewers can vote for their favorite contestants through the “American Idol” website, app, or via text. Each method allows for up to 10 votes per contestant.

In the upcoming top eight round, contestants will choose from three songs selected by judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. Live voting will determine the top six, with the judges saving one additional contestant to round out the top seven.

The episode will also pay tribute to Mandisa, a former contestant who passed away recently. The competition is fierce as the remaining singers battle it out for the title of the next “American Idol” champion.
