Four area high school basketball teams reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, but all fell short in the semifinals. Despite the defeat, the Frewsburg girls basketball team emerged as the highest-ranked local team in the final New York State Sportswriters Association rankings, securing the No. 3 spot in Class C.

The Bears concluded their season with an impressive 21-4 record, with their only loss in the state semifinals against Duanesburg, the eventual state finalist, in a close 54-51 game. State champion Moravia claimed the top spot in Class C, while Frewsburg’s Far West Regional opponent Dundee/Bradford followed closely at No. 4.

In the boys’ basketball rankings, the Salamanca team, led by senior Lucus Brown, secured the No. 5 spot in Class B. Despite falling short in the Far West Regional, the Warriors’ strong season earned them a top-five ranking. State champion Stillwater finished on top, with Avon, Newfane, and Fredonia rounding out the top 20.

Overall, the local high school basketball teams showcased their talent and determination throughout the season, with several teams making it to the state championships and earning respectable rankings in their respective classes. The dedication and hard work of the student-athletes and coaches were evident in their performances, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
