Top South Carolina Parks to Explore for Family Health and Fitness Day

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In South Carolina, health officials are highlighting the numerous benefits of the state’s parks beyond just physical health. According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), spending time in parks and open spaces can significantly improve mental health and cognitive function for people of all ages.

DHEC reported that individuals who utilize parks and outdoor areas are three times more likely to meet recommended physical activity goals. Adults are encouraged to engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, while children should aim for an hour of activity each day. The agency emphasized that these goals can be achieved through various activities and do not have to be completed all at once.

Lori Phillips, DHEC’s division director of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention, highlighted the importance of spending time outdoors in reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the risk of obesity, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Additionally, the agency noted that smoke-free and vape-free parks help prevent health issues associated with tobacco use, such as cancer and heart attacks.

Hellen Dekle, DHEC’s secondhand smoke and vaping aerosol protection manager, emphasized the importance of promoting healthy recreational environments that encourage physical activity and personal development while minimizing exposure to tobacco use.

South Carolina currently boasts 15 municipalities with designated smoke-free parks, providing residents with safe and healthy outdoor spaces to enjoy. To learn more about smoke-free settings in the state and discover information about trails, individuals can visit the DHEC website and SCTrails.net.
