Torres and Perez make Spain’s Euro 2024 squad, Asensio omitted

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Spain has announced their 29-man preliminary squad for the upcoming European Championship, with some surprising inclusions and omissions catching the attention of fans and pundits alike.

One of the biggest shocks was the absence of Marco Asensio from the squad, as the Real Madrid forward was left out by coach Luis de la Fuente. However, there were some unexpected inclusions, such as Barcelona teenagers Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, as well as their teammate Fermin Lopez who received his first call-up.

Speaking at a news conference, De La Fuente praised the enthusiasm and talent of players like Ferran Torres and Ayoze Perez, who made the cut for the preliminary squad. He also expressed his confidence in the abilities of the team to go deep in the tournament, despite the tough competition they will face.

The squad also saw the return of Real Madrid centre-back Nacho, while defenders Sergio Ramos, Pau Torres, and Pedro Porro missed out on a spot in the preliminary squad. De La Fuente emphasized the importance of minimizing risks and giving guarantees ahead of the final squad announcement on June 7.

Spain, who are the reigning UEFA Nations League champions, will play home friendlies against Andorra and Northern Ireland before kicking off their Group B campaign against Croatia on June 15 in Berlin. De La Fuente is hopeful that the team can make a strong push in the tournament and potentially go all the way.

With only two teams set to emerge as champions, the competition will be fierce, but Spain is determined to fight for their place in the final. The squad is filled with talent and versatility, with players like Alvaro Morata, Dani Olmo, and Mikel Oyarzabal leading the attack.

As the countdown to the European Championship begins, all eyes will be on Spain and their quest for glory. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the final squad announcement and the start of the tournament, where the team will look to showcase their potential and make a strong statement on the international stage.
