The long-awaited project to light up the Crescent City Connection bridge in New Orleans has finally begun, with crews working tirelessly to install thousands of programmable bulbs that will illuminate the bridge before the city hosts the Super Bowl in February 2025. However, motorists should brace themselves for months of traffic delays as a result.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has already implemented right lane closures on both sides of the Mississippi River bridge, which are expected to last until July. Following this, the left lanes will also be closed, causing further traffic congestion through mid-August. Additionally, the West Bank-bound Tchoupitoulas Street entrance ramp will be closed until mid-August, with drivers being redirected to detour on Magazine Street.

The closures are necessary for the removal of existing lights and the installation of new conduits and wiring for the project, which is estimated to be completed early next year. The $21 million project aims to enhance the 76-year-old bridge with modern programmable lights controlled by City Hall, replacing the old lights that went dark in 2021 after Hurricane Ida.

Despite the rising costs of the project, with bids exceeding the initial estimate, the city has agreed to cover half of the expenses with road transfer credit provided by the state. The city will own and manage the lighting infrastructure, with an estimated annual electricity cost of $50,000 to $80,000. Overall, the project is expected to bring a new and vibrant look to the iconic Crescent City Connection bridge, adding to the charm of the New Orleans skyline.
