Transport Gallery Inaugurated at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum in Kolkata on International Museum Day

Kolkata, India: A new transport gallery was unveiled at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum in Kolkata on Saturday to mark International Museum Day. The gallery showcases a range of transport systems from ancient chariots and boats to modern vehicles.

Among the exhibits are 18th-century Kolkata chariots and boats, as well as iconic vehicles like the Douglas Motor Cycle, NSU Fox Motor Cycle, Rolls Royce Phantom-1 car, and Fiat Tipo 103 car from the early 1900s. The gallery also features replicas of ancient vessels, ships, underground metro rail, and the historic George Stephenson’s Rocket Locomotive.

One of the highlights of the gallery is the inclusion of Indian Railways’ latest addition, the Vande Bharat train. Subhabrata Choudhury, the Director of the museum, emphasized the importance of showcasing both historical components and technological advancements in the transport sector.

Speaking about the museum, Choudhury explained, “It covers everything from the invention of wheels to modern aerospace technology, including Kolkata’s newly added underwater metro system. We have a wide range of exhibits, including the original car used by Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose and steam engines donated by Indian Railways.”

The museum aims to attract more visitors, especially students, with its diverse collection of transport-related artifacts. Choudhury mentioned that the museum has been a popular destination since its establishment in 1959, with an average of 2.5 lakh visitors annually.

With the addition of the new transport gallery, the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum hopes to continue inspiring and educating visitors about the evolution of transportation systems over the years.
