India’s Travel and Tourism Sector Booms Post-Pandemic, Creating Millions of Jobs

India’s travel and tourism sector has experienced a remarkable resurgence post-pandemic, fueled by the country’s growing popularity as a premier travel destination globally. In 2022, the sector contributed a staggering INR 15.9 trillion (USD 191.25 billion) to India’s economy, with projections indicating a further increase to INR 16.5 trillion in 2023. This growth has not only bolstered the economy but has also led to significant job creation across Tier I and Tier II cities.

Amidst the pandemic in 2020, the tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, representing 8% of the nation’s total workforce. Since then, the sector has shown rapid recovery, with talent demand surging by 44% in August 2023. It is estimated that an additional 1.6 million jobs will be created within the sector by the end of the year, with a projected 58.2 million jobs to be generated nationwide by 2033.

Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have emerged as the top five states attracting domestic tourists, while cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune lead the hiring surge. Tier 2 cities such as Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh are also experiencing growth, with emerging cities like Gujarat, Lakshadweep, and West Bengal expected to contribute to job creation in the sector over the next decade.

Key job profiles experiencing surges in demand include sales, business development, chefs, travel consultants, tour operators, hoteliers, guides, wildlife experts, and transportation providers. The sector is also witnessing significant transformation, with subsets like destination wedding travel, religious tourism, international tourism, adventure sports tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and rural tourism gaining prominence.

To address talent shortages and meet growing tourist demands, companies are increasingly adopting the gig model, with a 14% increase in gig roles within the sector since January 2023. This trend is expected to continue growing in the coming years, providing opportunities for translators, photographers, tour guides, and more within the travel and tourism industry.
