Japanese authorities in the town of Fujikawaguchiko are taking drastic measures to combat the influx of badly behaved foreign tourists crowding popular photo spots. A massive black barrier, 2.5 meters high and 20 meters long, will be installed to block the view of Mount Fuji from a picturesque viewpoint in the town.

The decision to erect the barrier comes after repeated incidents of tourists disrespecting rules, leaving litter behind, and ignoring traffic regulations. The town official expressed regret over the necessity of such action due to the behavior of some visitors.

This move is part of a larger trend in Japan to address issues of over-tourism, with residents in Kyoto’s geisha district also taking steps to limit visitor access to certain areas. The country has seen a record number of overseas tourists, exceeding three million in March alone.

The viewpoint in Fujikawaguchiko, known for its view of Mount Fuji behind a Lawson convenience store, has become a popular spot for tourists seeking the perfect photo. However, the overcrowding and disregard for rules have prompted authorities to take action to protect the area and nearby businesses.

The barrier is intended to remain in place until the situation improves, as Japan grapples with the challenges of managing tourism growth while preserving its cultural heritage and natural beauty. Other popular destinations worldwide are also implementing measures to address the impact of mass tourism, highlighting the need for sustainable tourism practices.
