Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has raised doubts about the claims made by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that China had interfered in the 2019 and 2021 Federal elections in Canada. Trudeau appeared before the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, headed by Justice Marie-Josee Hogue, to address these allegations.

During his testimony, Trudeau emphasized the need for caution when interpreting intelligence information, stating, “What I am saying, you have to take this intelligence, you have to take this information, with a certain awareness that it still needs to be confirmed or it might not be 100-per-cent accurate.”

The CSIS briefing note, titled Briefing to the Prime Minister’s Office on Foreign Interference Threats to Canada’s Democratic Institutions, accused China of clandestinely and deceptively interfering in the elections, particularly targeting the Conservative Party and its leader at the time, Erin O’Toole. The CSIS noted that China’s interference was motivated by the perception that the Conservative Party’s platform was anti-China.

O’Toole, who also testified before the inquiry, suggested that the alleged interference may have impacted the election outcome, leading to a loss of seats for the Conservative Party. He estimated that voter suppression tactics could have resulted in a loss of between five and nine seats.

The inquiry continues to investigate these claims of foreign interference in Canadian elections, with Trudeau and other key figures providing testimony to shed light on the matter. The implications of these allegations on Canada’s democratic processes and relations with China remain a topic of significant concern and debate.
