In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed former hedge fund CEO Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race, despite previously criticizing him two years ago. Trump made the announcement at a rally in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, where he praised McCormick as a smart and successful candidate who has sacrificed a lot to run for office.

McCormick, who is running unopposed in the upcoming GOP primary, is expected to face Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in the general election. The outcome of this swing state race could have significant implications for which party controls the Senate next year.

This endorsement marks a shift in Trump’s support for McCormick, as he had previously endorsed another candidate in the 2022 Senate race. However, McCormick’s refusal to acknowledge the 2020 election as stolen had led to Trump’s criticism at the time.

Despite not attending the rally, McCormick expressed gratitude for Trump’s endorsement on social media. As one of several self-funding Republicans in the Senate race, McCormick may not rely heavily on fundraising support from the former president.

The upcoming Senate race between McCormick and Casey is expected to be closely contested and expensive. Trump also took the opportunity at the rally to address the recent strike by Iran against Israel, criticizing President Biden’s response and pledging support for Israel. The crowd chanted “genocide Joe,” reflecting tensions surrounding U.S. foreign policy in the region.
