Former President Donald Trump faced a hostile crowd at the Libertarian Party National Convention on Saturday night, as attendees booed and shouted insults during his speech. The event, which was meant to court voters who might otherwise support independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., highlighted the deep divide within the party over Trump’s presence.
As Trump took the stage, he was met with a mix of cheers from his supporters and jeers from detractors. Libertarians, who prioritize small government and individual freedoms, have been skeptical of the former president, with some even calling him out for running up federal deficits and enriching pharmaceutical companies during the COVID-19 vaccine development.
During his speech, Trump took jabs at President Joe Biden, calling him a “tyrant” and the “worst president in the history of the United States.” This prompted some in the audience to shout back, accusing Trump of being just as bad. The former president tried to win over the crowd by promising to include a Libertarian in his Cabinet and pledging to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the drug-selling website Silk Road.
Despite these efforts, many in the crowd remained antagonistic towards Trump. Some Libertarian delegates even clashed over seating arrangements, with organizers asking Trump supporters to vacate the first four rows to make room for delegates who had traveled from around the country to attend the convention.
The split within the Libertarian Party over Trump’s appearance was evident, with some party members expressing disappointment in his presence. Peter Goettler, president and chief executive of the libertarian Cato Institute, wrote in a Washington Post column that Trump’s appearance violated the party’s core values.
Overall, Trump’s speech at the Libertarian convention highlighted the ongoing divisions within the party and the challenges he faces in winning over voters who may be looking for an alternative to the two major parties. As the convention wraps up, the Libertarian ticket will continue to try to draw support from disaffected Republicans and those on the left who oppose government overreach.
