In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party out-raised President Joe Biden and the Democrats last month for the first time in this election cycle. According to campaign officials, Trump’s campaign, along with the Republican Party and their affiliated committees, raised an impressive $76.2 million in April.

On the other hand, the Biden campaign reported raising $51 million in April with the Democratic National Committee, which was a significant drop from the $90 million they raised in March. Biden’s campaign committee specifically reported taking in $24.2 million in April, compared to $43.8 million in March.

Despite the fundraising success in April, Trump’s campaign still lags behind in total cash on hand compared to Biden. Biden’s campaign ended April with $84.5 million on hand, while Trump’s campaign had $48 million in net cash on hand.

Trump’s advisers had expected him to close the fundraising gap with Biden once he secured the Republican nomination, as he can now raise money in tandem with the Republican National Committee. However, Biden has been building a significant war chest with the Democratic National Committee, totaling $192 million.

The filings also revealed that Trump continues to spend millions of dollars on legal bills, with Save America committee paying $3.3 million in April for that purpose. Despite the fundraising success, Trump’s campaign spent very little in April, with most of the funds going towards mail and postage, legal consulting, and event staging.

Overall, the fundraising numbers reflect a busy month for Trump, with the Republican National Committee also raising $32 million in April. Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee reported raising $35.5 million in April, ending the month with $62 million on hand. The race for campaign funds continues to intensify as the 2024 election cycle progresses.
