Tunisia secures victory in Africa’s World Cup qualifiers with penalty decision

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Tunisia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in their World Cup qualifying match, thanks to a late penalty from Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane. The win propelled Tunisia to the top of their qualifying group, edging out Namibia who were held to a 1-1 draw by Liberia earlier in the day.

Equatorial Guinea, who had been stripped of six points in their previous qualifiers due to FIFA sanctions, put up a strong fight against Tunisia despite the absence of their top scorer Emilio Nsue. The match saw a controversial penalty decision in the 81st minute, with Tunisia capitalizing on the opportunity to secure the crucial three points.

In another surprising result, Togo was held to a draw by South Sudan after initially taking the lead through Khaled Narey. South Sudan quickly equalized with an own goal by Roger Ahoulou, showcasing their resilience in the face of tough opposition.

Sierra Leone managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Djibouti, with former Aston Villa defender Curtis Davis scoring the opening goal. Djibouti, on the other hand, struggled to break their losing streak in World Cup qualifiers, extending it to nine consecutive losses.

Elsewhere, Central African Republic edged out Chad 1-0 with a goal from Venuste Baboula, while Ghana and Senegal prepared for their upcoming qualifiers on Thursday. The African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup continue to provide thrilling matches and unexpected results, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as teams battle for a spot in the prestigious tournament.
