Two Louisiana inmates still at large after four escape prison by tunneling under fence – National

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Two Louisiana inmates are still on the run after escaping from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail over the weekend, while two others were apprehended hiding in a dumpster on Monday.

The daring escape took place when the four inmates managed to slip through an eight-inch gap under the perimeter fence of the jail during recreation time. The escapees were identified as Avery Guidry, 19, Travon Johnson, 21, Omarion Hookfin, 19, and Jamarcus Cyprian, 20.

Guidry and Johnson were found hiding in a dumpster behind a Dollar General Store about 30 kilometers away from the jail. However, Hookfin and Cyprian are still at large, sparking a manhunt in the area.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards revealed that Johnson, Hookfin, and Guidry were all inmates facing charges related to a 2022 homicide in Hammond, La. The trio was accused of breaking into a home and fatally shooting Donte Perry, as well as injuring Perry’s 12-year-old daughter.

Cyprian, on the other hand, was serving time for armed robbery and weapon charges from a separate crime.

The authorities were alerted to the jailbreak when a family member of one of the escapees called the police. It was later discovered that the inmates had to scale two additional fences to flee the jail.

Police Chief Jimmy Travis expressed concern over the escape, stating that if proper head counts had been conducted, the authorities would have been aware of the breakout immediately. Travis also mentioned that two inmates sought refuge at a relative’s home in the middle of the night, further highlighting the audacity of the escape.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hookfin and Cyprian to come forward. They have also assured anonymity for those who wish to provide tips through CrimeStoppers.

The escape of the inmates has raised questions about the security measures at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and the need for stricter protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
