Two Prince William County schools recognized with federal Green Ribbon award, the only schools in Virginia to receive the honor

Dale City and George P Mullen Elementary Schools in Virginia have been named 2024 Green Ribbon Schools by the United States Department of Education, making them the only two schools in the state to receive this prestigious award.

These schools were selected for their outstanding achievements in three key areas outlined by the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program: reducing environmental impact and cost, improving health and wellness, and providing effective environmental education.

Dr. Babur Lateef, chair of the Prince William County School Board, expressed immense pride in the schools’ accomplishments, stating that the recognition reflects the district’s dedication to environmental stewardship, sustainability education, and the overall well-being of its students. By instilling a culture of eco-consciousness, the schools are empowering young learners to become responsible global citizens.

This is not the first time that Prince William County has been recognized for its environmental efforts. The school division received the award in 2021, while Freedom High School was named a Green Ribbon School in 2023. Coles Elementary School also received the honor in 2015.

The Green Ribbon School program aims to highlight schools and districts that prioritize environmental awareness, energy efficiency, community engagement, and student wellness. In total, 41 schools, 10 districts, three postsecondary institutions, and one early learning center across the country will be honored by the Department of Education for their innovative sustainability initiatives.

The awards ceremony is set to take place later this year in Washington, where the honored schools will be celebrated for their commitment to creating a more sustainable and healthy learning environment for students.
