Two years after a leaked Supreme Court draft, abortion continues to dominate US politics and courts

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The ongoing battle over abortion rights in the United States continues to dominate the nation’s courts, legislatures, and political campaigns, with significant developments occurring in various states. In Florida, a ban on abortion after the first six weeks of pregnancy has taken effect, joining similar laws in two other states. Conversely, Arizona lawmakers voted to repeal a total ban on abortion dating back to 1864, while the Kansas Legislature increased funding for anti-abortion centers. In South Dakota, advocates have submitted signatures for a ballot measure to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

The landscape of abortion laws across the country is constantly evolving, with 14 states currently enforcing bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy, with limited exceptions. Meanwhile, Democratic-led states have been working to preserve or expand access to abortion services. Despite the changes in laws, studies have found that the number of monthly abortions nationally remains steady or has even increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

The highly charged political atmosphere surrounding abortion rights has led to emotional debates and significant activism on both sides of the issue. Individuals like Amanda Zurawski, who experienced a life-threatening situation due to denied abortion care, have become vocal advocates for abortion rights. The issue is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming presidential election, with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump taking opposing stances on the matter. As the debate rages on, the future of abortion rights in the United States remains uncertain.
