Reading Time: < 1 minute

United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin J. Massinga, made a historic visit to the American Gibbi in Addis Ababa today, where he delivered a powerful policy address on human rights and national dialogue. Reflecting on the Yekatit 12 Massacre of 1937, Ambassador Massinga praised the bravery of Chargé d’Affairs Cornelius Van Engert, who provided shelter to hundreds of Ethiopians within the Gibbi’s walls during the tragic event.

In his address, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of protecting human dignity and promoting peace through dialogue rather than violence. He called on Ethiopian leaders to make genuine efforts towards peace and reconciliation in various regions of the country. Ambassador Massinga also emphasized the role of the international community, including the United States, in promoting human rights and facilitating dialogue.

As the home of the African Union, Ethiopia plays a crucial role in shaping the continent’s future. A stable and prosperous Ethiopia is essential for the well-being of the entire African continent. The United States Embassy in Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to working with Ethiopian partners to promote human rights, strengthen democratic institutions, and foster inclusive dialogue.

The Ambassador’s visit and policy address mark a significant step towards building a more inclusive and transparent Ethiopia. The call for peace, reconciliation, and respect for human rights resonates not only within Ethiopia but also across the African continent. The United States remains dedicated to supporting Ethiopia on its journey towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
