U.S. News Honors Hospitals in the U.S. for Exceptional Black Patient Outcomes

In honor of Black Maternal Health Week 2024, U.S. News & World Report has recognized 26 Maternity Care Hospitals across the United States for achieving excellent outcomes among Black patients. These hospitals, located in 13 states, have shown exceptional success in supporting Black maternal health by ensuring positive outcomes for cesarean sections and unexpected newborn complications.

Among the highlighted hospitals are Allina Health United Hospital in Saint Paul, MN, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, CA, and Atrium Health Pineville in Charlotte, NC. North Carolina stands out with the most recognized hospitals, with six facilities achieving excellent outcomes for Black patients.

U.S. News identified these hospitals based on their performance in cesarean section rates and newborn complication rates among Black patients. Hospitals had to serve at least 20 Black patients per year and maintain complication rates below 2.62% and c-section rates below 23.9%. These high-performing hospitals provide a crucial service in supporting and advancing Black maternal health.

Black Maternal Health Week, founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, is observed annually in April as part of National Minority Health Month. This year marks the seventh annual observation of the week, emphasizing the importance of maternal health within the Black community.

The recognition of these 26 Maternity Care Hospitals underscores U.S. News’ commitment to health equity and access to quality maternity care for all women.
