Shreekumar, a 38-year-old businessman in Dubai, learned this the hard way when he ignored a sharp pain in his shoulder while playing volleyball.

Shreekumar twisted his shoulder while smashing the ball but continued playing, thinking it was just a minor injury. He applied ice and took pain medication, but the pain persisted and even spread to his back and right arm. Eventually, after consulting a doctor, he was diagnosed with an injury in his rotator cuff.

According to Dr. Mohamad Awad, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, ignoring mild pain is a common occurrence among physically active individuals. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of runners and recreational athletes have experienced pain while exercising. The desire to stay in shape and achieve training goals often leads people to overlook these warning signs.

Dr. Radjah Farhi, a specialist orthopaedic, warns that ignoring mild pain can worsen the condition and increase the risk of severe injuries. It can also lead to compensatory movement patterns that strain other parts of the body. Conditions like tendonitis, bursitis, stress fractures, and degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis can develop if mild pain is left untreated.
