Reading Time: 2 minutes

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, made a significant announcement during the UAE Cabinet meeting at Qasr Al Watan, Abu Dhabi. The Cabinet approved the launch of a new category called “Blue Residency,” marking a historic moment in the country’s efforts towards sustainability and environmental action.

The Blue Residency is the first long-term residency program designed for individuals who have made exceptional contributions and efforts in the field of environmental action and sustainability, both within and outside the United Arab Emirates. This initiative aims to amplify and maintain the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with the directives of the UAE President to extend the Year of Sustainability initiative from 2023 to include 2024.

The Blue Residency will be granted to a diverse group of sustainability advocates, including members of international organizations, global award winners, distinguished activists and researchers in environmental work, as well as members of associations and non-governmental organizations. Emirati nationals and responsible residents who are advocates of environmental protection are also eligible for the Blue Residency.

Individuals interested in applying for the UAE Blue Residency can do so directly through the services of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. They can also be nominated by competent authorities in the state for consideration. This new category of residency is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding those who are dedicated to preserving the environment and promoting sustainability.

The announcement of the Blue Residency comes at a time when environmental issues are at the forefront of global discussions. With climate change and sustainability becoming increasingly urgent concerns, the UAE’s initiative to honor and support individuals who are leading the way in environmental action is commendable.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s leadership in championing sustainability and environmental protection sets a positive example for other countries to follow. By creating the Blue Residency, the UAE is not only acknowledging the importance of environmental stewardship but also encouraging others to take action in safeguarding the planet for future generations.

As the UAE continues to prioritize sustainability and environmental conservation, the launch of the Blue Residency is a significant step towards recognizing and celebrating the efforts of individuals who are making a difference in the field of environmental action. This new category of residency serves as a symbol of the country’s commitment to building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
