UAE to Ban Single-Use Styrofoam Products from 1 June: Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development

Abu Dhabi to Ban Styrofoam Products from June 2024

In a move to further enhance environmental sustainability, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a ban on a series of Styrofoam products in the emirate, effective from 1 June 2024. This decision is part of the Single-Use Plastic Policy launched by EAD in 2020, aimed at reducing the usage of avoidable, single-use consumer products.

The banned products include cups, lids, plates, and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene. Additionally, food container receptacles for products intended for immediate consumption, as well as containers for products ready to be consumed without further preparation, will also be prohibited. However, products not designed for single consumer use, such as storage boxes, coolers, and trays for retail sale items, will be exempt from the ban. Medical products made of Styrofoam are also excluded.

Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, emphasized the importance of this ban in reducing litter and preventing Styrofoam from breaking down into harmful microplastics that can enter the food chain. She highlighted the success of previous initiatives under the Single-Use Plastic Policy, including the ban on plastic bags and the introduction of a bottle return scheme, which have significantly reduced plastic waste in the emirate.

Dr Al Dhaheri stated, “We are striving to make life easy for consumers while maintaining the balance of conserving the environment at the same time. For the ban, we have only selected items that are avoidable single-use plastics and have clear and sustainable alternatives. We will also provide support to government and private sector entities to facilitate the shift towards reusable solutions.”

His Excellency Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), reaffirmed ADDED’s commitment to supporting environment-friendly strategies. He highlighted the role of ADDED in raising awareness among commercial outlets and industrial facilities to comply with the single-use plastic policy and transition to eco-friendly alternatives.

ADDED has shared the circular on the Styrofoam ban with over 50,000 commercial establishments and 80 industrial facilities involved in plastic manufacturing. An awareness program has been launched in coordination with EAD to educate businesses about the ban and provide information on alternative products. Field inspection campaigns will be conducted to ensure compliance with the ban starting from 1 June 2024.

The proactive approach taken by EAD and ADDED reflects the commitment of Abu Dhabi to environmental conservation and sustainable practices. With the ban on Styrofoam products, the emirate is taking another step towards a greener and cleaner future.
