Dubai Unveils 13.5 km Bicycle Track Connecting Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills

In a bid to transform Dubai into a bicycle-friendly city and promote a healthy lifestyle, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the construction of a 13.5 km track tailored for bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians. This new track, which connects Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street, features two architecturally innovative bridges crossing over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Executive Council, the RTA is working towards creating an environment that encourages people to practice cycling as a sport and as a sustainable mode of transport.

According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the project encompasses a track and two bridges designed for cyclists and pedestrians. The track is part of the Hessa Street Improvement Project, which aims to enhance connectivity and improve the overall infrastructure in the area.

The multi-use track measures 4.5 meters in width and accommodates 5,200 users per hour. It serves 12 diverse residential, commercial, and educational areas, including popular neighborhoods like Al Barsha and Al Barsha Heights. The track is designed to improve connectivity for first and last-mile trips, linking with key transportation hubs like the Dubai Internet City Metro Station.

The two uniquely designed bridges, spanning over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, are 5 meters wide and offer a visually appealing design inspired by the surrounding environment. The bridges not only provide a safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians but also enhance the overall aesthetic of the area.

The Hessa Street Improvement Project is expected to cater to over 640,000 inhabitants by 2030, doubling the capacity of Hessa Street to accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The project also includes upgrades to four major intersections along Hessa Street, further improving traffic flow and accessibility in the area.

The cycling track connecting Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills is part of Dubai’s larger plan to expand its cycling tracks network to 1,000 km by 2030. This expansion aims to connect various key areas in the emirate and promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transport.

Overall, the new bicycle track and bridges signify Dubai’s commitment to creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city, while also promoting a healthier lifestyle for its residents and visitors. The project is set to enhance connectivity, improve traffic flow, and encourage more people to embrace cycling as a viable transportation option.
