UAE’s National Committee of Biosecurity Convenes Second Meeting in 2024 to Discuss Epidemic Preparedness Map Project and National Biosecurity Framework

The National Committee of Biosecurity in the United Arab Emirates recently held its second meeting for the year 2024, focusing on key initiatives to enhance biosecurity in the country. The committee, chaired by HE Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, discussed various critical topics, including the need to strengthen mosquito control efforts in light of the unprecedented rainfall that occurred in the UAE.

During the virtual meeting, HE Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE’s commitment to prioritizing biosecurity and implementing a comprehensive ecosystem for sustainable biosecurity. She emphasized the importance of controlling mosquito proliferation, especially following the extreme weather conditions experienced in the country. Dr. Al Dahak expressed gratitude to the members of the committee and working teams for their efforts in improving biosecurity and maintaining sustainable practices.

The meeting also addressed updates on the ‘National Biosecurity Framework 2023-2032′ and efforts to expedite its implementation in collaboration with the National Committee of Biosecurity. The Epidemic Preparedness Map Project was presented, along with discussions on coordination with the Cyber Security Council and the UAE Data Centre to enhance decision-makers’ access to information.

Strategies for improving mosquito control across all emirates in the UAE were a key focus of the meeting. This included monitoring mosquito proliferation, coordinating control efforts with relevant authorities, and educating the public on sustainable practices to prevent mosquitoes and effectively manage their population.

HE Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment; HE Major General Jassim Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Commander-in-Chief of Civil Defense at the Ministry of Interior; and other high-ranking officials from various government departments attended the meeting. The attendees discussed collaborative efforts to enhance biosecurity and address key challenges in the field.

The meeting also saw the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, Dubai Municipality, NCEMA, and other relevant entities. The diverse group of attendees reflected the multi-sectoral approach taken by the UAE to tackle biosecurity issues comprehensively.

Overall, the second meeting of the National Committee of Biosecurity in 2024 highlighted the UAE’s commitment to sustainable biosecurity practices and the importance of collaboration among government entities to address emerging challenges. With a focus on mosquito control, epidemic preparedness, and national biosecurity frameworks, the committee’s efforts aim to safeguard public health and environmental well-being in the UAE.
