UAE’s Sheikh Rashid Street sees 900 lighting units upgraded to LED technology by RTA along 9 km

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently completed a major upgrade to the lighting system along Sheikh Rashid Street, a key artery in the city. The project involved replacing 900 lighting units with energy-efficient LED lights, covering a stretch of 9 km and 10 lanes in both directions.

This initiative is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability of road infrastructure in Dubai and align with the emirate’s strategic goals of energy conservation and promoting a green economy. By switching to LED lighting, the RTA aims to reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs, and contribute to the UAE’s Sustainability Initiative 2024.

The upgrade was carried out in three phases over a period of six months. The first phase focused on the section from Deira to Al Garhoud Bridge, followed by the stretch between Deira and Bur Dubai, and finally, the sector from Bur Dubai to the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa Street with Sheikh Rashid Street.

Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at RTA, highlighted the benefits of LED lighting compared to traditional options. He explained that LED technology is more environmentally friendly, consuming 60% less energy and lasting up to 173% longer than conventional lights. This not only reduces the frequency of lamp replacements but also cuts down on maintenance and operational costs. Additionally, LED lights are more efficient, reducing energy losses and heat emissions by 38%.

The new LED units offer improved brightness and color clarity, enhancing nighttime visibility and traffic safety on Dubai’s roads. With 4000 degrees of brightness compared to 2000 degrees from conventional lights, the LED lights provide better quality lighting. Moreover, the new units are free from harmful materials, aligning with RTA and Dubai’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

RTA’s commitment to enhancing the road network and facilities extends to incorporating smart and innovative technical solutions tailored to the UAE’s climate. By upgrading Dubai’s streetlight system with energy-efficient LED lighting, the RTA is not only improving visibility and safety for motorists but also contributing to the city’s sustainability goals.

Overall, the successful completion of the LED lighting upgrade on Sheikh Rashid Street marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient road infrastructure in Dubai. The RTA’s efforts to embrace new technologies and practices demonstrate its dedication to enhancing the city’s transportation network while prioritizing environmental conservation.
