Ubisoft Cancels Development of Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland

In a surprising move, Ubisoft announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated free-to-play third-person shooter, Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland. The decision was made as part of a strategic reallocation of resources, with the company opting to shift focus to other projects such as XDefiant and Rainbow Six.

The news came as a shock to fans of the franchise, as The Division Heartland was set to be a standalone title for consoles and PC. Developed by Red Storm, the game was initially slated for release by the end of 2022 but faced multiple delays. A closed beta was launched in June 2023, but the project has now been officially scrapped.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot emphasized the company’s commitment to profitable growth and highlighted upcoming titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws. Despite the cancellation of The Division Heartland, Ubisoft remains dedicated to expanding its footprint in the gaming industry, particularly in the realm of open-world adventure games and games-as-a-service titles.

This decision marks the latest in a series of cancellations for Ubisoft, with several unannounced projects being axed in recent years. The company also reported a significant number of layoffs, further underscoring the challenges faced by the video game industry.

While The Division Heartland may no longer be in development, fans can still look forward to the upcoming mobile game, The Division Resurgence, as well as a Netflix movie starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. Ubisoft’s commitment to the franchise remains strong, with Resurgence set for release by March 2025.
