UHS girls aim to defend team title as local teams prepare for state tennis tournament

The excitement is building as the 2024 WVSSAC state tennis tournament kicks off today in Charleston, West Virginia. The Kanawha City Community Center and the YMCA will be the venues for this highly anticipated event, where high school tennis players from Morgantown and University will compete for individual championships and team titles.

The defending champions, University High girls’ team, are looking to repeat their success from last year. Led by players like Lyla Byers and Emma Rusiecki, they are determined to defend their team state championship. Coach Tom McClellan emphasized the importance of strong play and teamwork for their success.

On the boys’ side, University High’s freshman standout Kalman Nagy will be a player to watch in the individual tournament. Alongside Andrew McClellan, they will form a formidable doubles team. Coach McClellan praised Nagy’s improvement throughout the season and believes they have a shot at making a deep run in the tournament.

Morgantown High School will also be well represented, with both girls and boys teams qualifying for the tournament. Maya Greenlee and Anika Chadha will lead the girls’ team, while Wyatt Abbitt, Solas Chinn-Kreiner, and Larry Du will represent the boys’ team.

With matches starting at 8 a.m. each day, the competition promises to be intense and exciting. Fans can expect thrilling matches and fierce competition as these talented young athletes battle it out on the courts for state glory.
