UK court hears Chelsea director threatened by football agent over Zouma fee

A football agent’s demand for a six-figure commission over the transfer of French defender Kurt Zouma has landed him in hot water with the law. Saif Rubie, 45, sent a threatening email to Marina Granovskaia, the director of football at Premier League club Chelsea FC, after Zouma’s move to West Ham United in 2021.

Prosecutors allege that Rubie insisted he and his partners were owed £300,000 ($373,000) from the deal, despite Chelsea receiving a total of £29.1 million, including a £4.1 million termination payment to Zouma. In the email, Rubie referenced a past incident involving another football agent, Kia Joorabchian, who was allegedly accosted and extorted for money.

Granovskaia testified in court that Rubie’s email made her feel “very nervous, worried, and threatened,” fearing that she might be faced with demands for money. However, she admitted that Rubie had never threatened her before, either in writing or in person.

The trial, which began at Southwark Crown Court, is expected to conclude next week. Rubie has pleaded not guilty to a charge under the Malicious Communications Act.
