Ukraine alleges shooting down of Russian bomber, Moscow refutes claim

Ukraine claimed to have shot down a strategic Russian bomber on Friday, sparking a dispute with Moscow over the incident. While Ukraine insists that its military intelligence and air force successfully brought down the Tu-22M3 bomber with anti-aircraft missiles, Russia maintains that the plane crashed in a sparsely populated area in the southern region of Stavropol due to a malfunction.

The conflicting reports come amidst heightened tensions between the two countries, with Russia increasing its military presence in south and eastern Ukraine. Despite Russia’s superior air force, Ukraine’s possession of sophisticated missile systems provided by Western allies poses a significant threat to Russian aviation.

According to Ukrainian officials, the bomber is commonly used by Russia to launch Kh-22 cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets from within its airspace. The Ukrainian report also mentioned that three crew members were rescued after ejecting from the aircraft, with a search underway for a fourth.

This is not the first time Ukraine has claimed to have shot down Russian warplanes. In recent months, Ukrainian forces have reported shooting down fighter jets, early warning and control planes, and even a military transport plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war.
