Ukraine: Russia deploys 25,000 troops in attempt to capture Chasiv Yar area

Russia’s 25,000 troops are currently attempting to storm the eastern Ukrainian town of Chasiv Yar and surrounding villages, according to Ukraine’s military. The situation in the area has been described as difficult, with Ukraine maintaining full control of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important location in the partially-occupied Donetsk region.

Kyiv’s top commander has expressed concerns that Russia is aiming to capture the town by May 9, which marks Soviet Victory Day in World War Two. Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesman for the eastern military command, stated, “The situation around the town is difficult, however the situation is controllable… Our defenders are both receiving reinforcement and stabilising the line.”

The capture of Chasiv Yar would bring Russia closer to two crucial cities under Ukrainian control, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Despite Russia’s advancements, long-awaited U.S. military assistance is expected to reach Ukraine in the coming days, alleviating critical ammunition shortages.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged the challenges faced by Ukrainian soldiers but expressed optimism that the necessary assistance would help improve the situation.
