A devastating missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has left the Trypilska power plant in ruins, officials confirmed on Thursday. The plant, which supplied electricity to millions of customers in the Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions, was targeted multiple times, resulting in the destruction of critical components and a raging fire that engulfed the facility.

Workers at the plant narrowly escaped harm by seeking shelter as the first drone approached, witnessing the destruction of their workplace from a safe distance. The chairman of the plant’s supervisory board, Andrii Gota, described the scene as “terrifying,” with rescuers still working to clear the rubble hours later.

Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the attacks as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, escalating tensions between the two countries. The strikes on the Trypilska plant and other energy facilities have left significant damage, with over 200,000 people in the Kharkiv region without power.

Despite the destruction, the grid was able to compensate for the loss of the Trypilska plant’s output, preventing widespread power outages for now. However, the long-term consequences of the attacks could impact energy supply as summer approaches and air conditioning usage increases.
