Russian forces have launched a new offensive in Ukraine’s northern fringes, with footage from the frontline providing a glimpse into the unfolding situation. The incursion began in the Kharkiv region on Friday, May 10, as Russian ground troops, supported by warplanes, drones, and artillery, crossed the Ukrainian border.
The focus has shifted from the eastern front to the northeast, particularly the city of Kharkiv, located just 20 miles from the border. Sky News has geolocated footage showing Ukrainian soldiers retreating south from the border as Russian forces advance.
Additional videos reveal Russian troops entering Vovchansk from the northwest, with some footage showing them being targeted by Ukrainian drones. The conflict has escalated, with Russian forces moving into residential areas and facing intense bombing.
Further west, Russian forces have made progress towards the town of Lyptsi, just 20km from Kharkiv. Geolocated images show destroyed Russian vehicles near the Ukrainian border, while drone footage captures Ukrainian forces targeting Russian troops along their advance.
Despite Russian advancements, Ukrainian forces have fought back, capturing surviving Russians in some instances. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the offensive is not aimed at capturing Kharkiv but rather establishing a “security zone” in the region.
While the situation remains fluid, the majority of the fighting is still concentrated in the east, where Russia holds significant portions of Ukrainian territory. The conflict continues to evolve, with both sides engaged in a fierce battle for control.
