Ukraine’s Parliament Approves Legislation to Revamp Military Draft Regulations | Global News

Ukraine’s parliament passed a crucial bill on Thursday aimed at overhauling how the armed forces draft civilians into its ranks, in response to the stark revelation that Russian forces outnumber Kyiv’s troops up to ten times on the battlefield in the east.

The bill, which was openly supported by the military, seeks to bolster the number of troops more than two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. General Yuriy Sodol, commander of the joint forces, passionately urged lawmakers to pass the bill, assuring them that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would not let down the people of Ukraine.

With the acute problems of manpower and artillery shell shortages plaguing Ukraine’s armed forces, the bill is seen as a critical step in addressing these issues. General Sodol emphasized the urgent need for more troops, especially in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine.

The bill, which received a majority of 283 votes, still awaits President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s signature before becoming law. It includes provisions for better tracking of potential draftees and removes draconian penalties for draft dodging that had sparked public outrage.

While the legislation is a significant step forward, Deputy Commander Maksym Zhorin cautioned that it would not bring miracles on the battlefield. He emphasized the need for continued support and resources to effectively combat the well-equipped Russian forces.

The passage of this bill comes after months of deliberation and debate in parliament, with lawmakers finally reaching a consensus on the crucial reforms needed to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities in the face of ongoing threats.
